Adventures with Kay and Sombra

Cassian rested his hand on his pistol blaster in his bag as he walked towards the ship. It would be good to get off this spaceport as there were more refugees and smugglers, a dangerous combination. A delicious smell surprised him and Cassian stopped to near the doorway as a voice called out, "Everyone must eat. Do you want to spend your time hungry in hyperspace?"

There wasn't much in the ship and it would be good to prepare before the next mission which had tight timing. He opened the door to find Milliways, another good option.

Kay draws back and processes Sombra's words for a moment.

She is a curious person, but Kay is beginning to lose his objections to her.

"I believe I now have sufficient data to make my calculations by."

"Excellent!"

Sombra beams at both Cassian and Kay, reaching out and making a grabby-hands gesture at the datapad.

"Will you tell us the new percentages, Kay? I promise I will be listening, even as I will also be going over this data."

Base schematics, last known uses, software and hardware updates and ages -- she's looking for all of this, and a little bit more besides. Just to know which programs and algorithms to tuck at the top of her queue.

At her reaching hands, Cassian beams as he hands the datapad over, “Sombra should have decreased a few of the risks.”

Kay gets to his calculations, announcing after a minute, "There is an 89.5% chance of success on our mission. Within that success rate there is a 23% chance things will go terribly and Cassian will die, but only a 16% chance you will perish, Sombra."

So congratulations to her!

Sombra looks up to beam at Kay.

"Oh, those are good numbers."

Her gaze flicks across to Cassian.

"Rest assured, my friend, that I am not planning on leaving you to die."

They will all go down together! Or, you know. No one will go down at all.

Cassian nods, those are good odds, usually they’re weighted against them,

“I’ve dealt with worse numbers, for us they’re kind of nice ones.”

"Invisibility helps the odds, as does the base not currently being in use," Kay explains.

"My presence is also a difference maker, as Cassian often runs into trouble when alone."

"Yes," Sombra says, smirking at both of them while tapping her fingers against her lips.

"I can very easily see how that will happen."

“I still don’t like those fly-bys but they should be manageable. The base has stormy weather, nothing awful but enough to put off a lazy pilot. Any questions?”

"Is Sombra getting a blaster?" Kay asks when the prompt for questions is given. "Because if she is I believe I should get one, too."

"If I get a blaster, is there time for me to decorate it before we go in?"

Such are the vital questions of a trans-universal slicer.

Obviously.

"Do want a blaster?" He thought Sombra had her own weapons.

"Is there a reason for decorating your weapon?" Kay asks. Cassian has never decorated his blaster.

"I thought ballistic weapons were antiquated here! I do not want to get you in trouble by leaving evidence behind."

If he doesn't mind, she doesn't mind. But also she wouldn't mind a blaster, even if she has to give it back at the end of the night.

Anyway.

"As for the reasons for decoration -- one, I like it. Two, it is a calling card, of sorts. Three, there is a lot mission time that is spent waiting, and that gets dull. And four, because I can. Is any one of those not reason enough?"

"It would generate questions which could be a distraction. What would you decorate it with? Because I'd need to be able to clean it off fairly easily. Kay, you don't need a blaster. You're dangerous enough without one,"

Cassian does have an extra one and looks between the two of them.

Kay considers Sombra's listed reasons before concluding, "They are not exactly logical reasons, but they do make more sense than some of the reasons for other things I have been given."

People do not always make the most sense.

"Any of them are satisfactory on their own. All together, I would say Cassian should allow you to decorate."

Especially since Cassian still won't give Kay his own blaster.

"You would not let me take it back with me?"

Cassian, she is crushed!

"But I think the nail polish I have with me should be easy enough to remove with solvent, no? Three colors is enough to do some moderate work, I think."

She grins at Kay, because look at that, he's got her back in her ridiculousness! Victory!

Kay agreeing is unexpected and Cassian goes to his larger pack to find his smaller blaster and handing it with her,

"No, I've made modifications on all my blasters. They're not easy to replace."

Sombra did say they were friends, and while Kay is still dubious on that front the fact that her presence has increased the odds of Cassian's survival on this mission does help sway Kay a bit.

"Cassian is very attached to his weapons," he informs Sombra.

"I understand," Sombra says, saluting Cassian in a very relaxed fashion.

"I am similarly attached to my tech, and so."

He hands her his sporting blaster,

"They help keep me alive. There's a silencer on this which alters the balance."

"I help keep you alive," Kay reminds Cassian, just in case the man forgets.

Sombra takes the indicated blaster, turning it over and over in her hands while inspecting it.

Then she looks up, as Kay finishes speaking.

"How about we all help keep each other alive, hmm? Blasters or no."

Now, which pocket of her coat has her nail polish in it . . .

"Yes, you do, Kay and I'm grateful for it, but for this, we all look after each other,"

Hopefully they won't be testing too much as he knows Kay will look after him, but he's going to keep an eye on Sombra. She's a good fighter but this is a situation that he knows better.

Kay lays a hand on his own chest.

"You would keep me from being destroyed?" he asks Sombra with a slight air of surprise.
