Convention III-Yamato's practice flights
They're on the edge of the city after hauling the ship in transport behind them. Now they're at a little used landing pad which one of Cassian's other connections told him about.
He sets up some lights as its late afternoon but night will be coming soon. The weather's clear and the city is a rosy glow on the horizon.

Whether he's doing a good job of that depends on how well one knows him: He doesn't seem exactly nervous outwardly, but the moment they left and started hauling the ship, he became even more scowly and taciturn than usual, answering questions mostly by snapping or growling a few words at a time.
(It's his first real flight, after a decade of using sims, and that'd be nerve-wracking enough, but Yamato wasn't sure he'd ever get this far.)
As Cassian sets up the lights, he paces around the ship, checking it for any problems and not really finding any.

Once the lights are set, Cassian does some quick work to set up his comm station and then asks, "Ready?"
no subject
"We should run some pre-flight diagnostics first. Make sure everything's working."
He already knows that everything's working. They wouldn't be out here getting ready for a flight if anything wasn't.
no subject
He knows Yamato's nervous and he's happy to go slow to give Yamato time to prepare himself.
no subject
He already knows what the outcome of those diagnostics will be. He knows that Cassian knows what the outcome of those diagnostics will be. Still, a little more time to prepare himself is useful.

He says as he goes to open the engine compartment.

The nerves are making his head swim a little, but he forces himself to concentrate, running through some quick tests on the controls and making sure everything is where he thinks it should be.

"Switching on the comms now," he says after a moment, and waits for Cassian to get back to the comm station. "Testing, testing."

He flicks a few switches, and the ship hums to life as the cockpit displays light up.
no subject
Cassian's going to keep things nice and official, working through every step. That's what helped him when he started flying, hearing other pilots trusting him to know what he was doing.

"Fuel levels and pressure are green, comms are green, navigation is working, gust locks are disengaged," he rattles off. "Checking flight controls now: Flaps are operational, rudder is operational, ailerons are operational, elevator is operational. All systems are green."
no subject
When he hears the systems are good, Cassian strikes a more personal note, "Cleared for take off. Enjoy yourself up there."
no subject
Beat.
"... Fuck, you're not even flying, why did I say that, doesn't even make sense." There's the sound of Yamato hurriedly clearing his throat, then, growled over the line: "Roger that. Activating thrusters and disengaging the landing gear."
There's a dull roar as the thrusters start, before the landing gear retracts back into the ship, leaving it floating.
no subject
"Over, you look good from down here."
no subject
It seems like the obvious question, otherwise he's just flying aimlessly.
no subject
And then they can see about more intense practice.
no subject
Yamato's not too proud to admit that having something relatively gentle for his first flight is a relief.
... All right, he is absolutely too proud to admit that, but it's still true.
"Navigation received, setting out now," he says, before easing the ship away from the landing pad, swooping about and gaining altitude.
no subject
As he eases off, Cassian allows himself a larger smile since he remembers his first flight and the fear and joy of it.
no subject
But even through that, he can fly the ship as though it's second nature, soaring through the route and picking up speed as he goes.
no subject
Cassian wants to know if Yamato's feeling comfortable out there, this silence is unnerving from him.
no subject
Yamato sounds like he barely heard what Cassian said. It takes him a moment to catch up, during which time the ship continues gracefully soaring along the route, swooping around obstacles as it goes.
"... Oh, right, it, er. It handles fine. Very smooth."
no subject
Yamato does seem pleased just not as focused as Cassian would like.
no subject
The ship starts picking up speed a few moments later, dancing around a few of the obstacles as it does. It's not at full speed yet, but it's definitely going fast by any metric.
